Steven Renderos

Steven (he/him) is a community organizer, DJ and audio producer. Currently he’s the Executive Director of MediaJustice, a national racial justice organization that advances the media and technology rights of people of color. He’s led campaigns that lowered the cost of prison phone calls nationwide, secured the nation’s strongest Net Neutrality rules, and got Donald Trump kicked off of Twitter and Facebook. In the past he was the coordinator of the Minnesota Media Empowerment Project at the Department of Chicano Studies at the University of Minnesota.

In addition to producing Bring Receipts he also is the producer of Revolutionary Spirits, a 4-part history podcast on the life and martyrdom of Mexican revolutionary leader Francisco Madero. Steven is also the co-founder of Radio Pocho, a radio program on KFAI in Minneapolis. The show has been on the air for over 10 years and features a variety of genres that reflect the diverse musical influences of Latinx people in the United States. Steven’s also been a part-time DJ for the past 18 years, getting people dancing on virtual and IRL dancefloors under the name DJ Ren. His most recent mixtape is a tribute to one of his favorite artists: Bad Bunny aka San Benito.

Spanish was Steven’s first language so a lot of his earliest memories of pop culture involved telenovelas, Sabado Gigante, and any music played on KLOVE, his mom’s favorite radio station. He picked up English by watching episodes of The Simpsons. The very first album he owned was the soundtrack to the movie La Bamba. A native of Los Angeles with Salvadoran roots, Steven currently resides in Tucson, AZ.
